Government Funding

Goverment funding is available for disabled persons and eldery for home modifications from the Ministry of Health.

Housing modifications can only be provided if a specialised assessor has identified that the modification is essential for you to:

  1. Have mobility into and within the home
  2. Remain in or return to your home, or,
  3. Be the primary carer of dependent children.

Funding is also available from ACC for those whose disability has been caused by an accident. This can include home modifications.

FAQ Ministry of Health Funding (Not Including ACC)

Is the funding a repayable loan?

No. Funding is non-repayable.

How does the funding process work?

The funding process can differ depending on what you are applying for and what area of New Zealand you live in. There are however three stages that are common to the funding process for all applications:

1) The person applying for funding is assessed by a specialised assessor (e.g. an Occupational Therapist).

2) The specialised assessor then sends a funding application to the funding approval service.

3) Once funding has been approved, the service (e.g. the equipment) is provided to the person, and the supplier is paid directly by the funding approval service.

Who makes the rules about eligibility for funding?

The funding criteria is set by the Disability Services Directorate of the Ministry of Health.
